Javier had been on raids with Lopez before, killing and dismembering debtors, even wealthy ones living in enormous mansions who had neglected a payment, but he’d never been on a ship so large. After they killed the Americans, he would urge taking it back to Calderon as a trophy.

He walked the starboard promenade, while Arturo took the port side. He entered a door to a narrow passageway, where he saw was a wider hallway at the end and to the right. A door closed shut. Someone there is going to die.

He walked around the bend into the larger hallway and saw several doors on both sides, a few close together. The ones on his left didn’t look like cabin doors. He posed his AK-47 against his shoulder, flipped on the rifle’s light, and swung open the first door. It was a dark, narrow storage closet, only six feet deep, with shelves filled with blankets, sheets, towels, pillows, and other hotel room-like items. But no persons.

Javier stepped back out into the hallway and opened the next door. It was a janitor closet, filled with a large sink and cleaning supplies. Again, no one.

As he stepped cautiously back into the hallway, he now distinctively heard a low humming sound down and across the hall. His heart pounded as he crept up to the room’s door, which simply read, “Ward”. Through its thick oval window, he peeked inside, but saw no one. He could hear the hum within. Taking a deep breath, he placed his finger on the rifle’s trigger, swung the door open and set off a spray of bullets across the room. He paused. The humming was coming from a portion of the room that was partitioned off.

He now also noticed someone lying underneath a sheet on a table. He fired a single shot to the head of the body through the sheet, but there was no movement. He walked over and yanked the sheet away. A young man lay there, but there was no blood coming from the head wound. Puzzled, Javier then noticed a bluish coloring on the man’s lips. This is a corpse.

Behind him the humming stopped. Javier spun around as a series of loud mechanical thumping noises started. He walked over, but, seeing no one, held his fire. He stared at the strange white metal box with a circular opening in the middle. His gun ready, he approached slowly. What is it?

Suddenly he felt pressure on his back and an unbearable electrical surge through his body, causing him to drop his rifle and collapse on the floor. His body involuntarily convulsed and his teeth chattered uncontrollably. A blonde woman quickly knelt down beside him and said, “One more time.” She placed two plastic paddles against his chest, and he felt another surge of electricity. His heart’s rhythm beat oddly, and Javier felt like he was having a heart attack. Then all went black.
