Chapter 15
THEN
Gunnar
This was another moment I should have let her go. Let her leave thinking the worst. The wedge between us so immutable there would be no recovering from it. No chance we would ever cross the chasm.
But she was near tears.
And she could believe the worst of me. It would probably be better if she did.
But I couldnât let her go believing the worst of herself, too. I couldnât have her embarrassed by the way she gave herself to me. The way she wanted and desired and demanded and finally came.
But I also couldnât fuck her.
Trust me, no one was more surprised than me.
She got to her feet and I caught her hand. Still not looking at her. I was trying, for fuckâs sake, to do the right thing. I couldnât do the right thing and look her beauty in the face.
I was, after all, just a man, and not a very good one at that.
âLet me go,â she demanded in a frost-burned voice.
âSit.â
âFuck you, Gunnar.â
âPlease.â
She struggled against me, and I grabbed her by the waist and pushed her back onto the seat. Brenna was strong and she was pissed, but she wasnât going to win in a physical fight against me. And she knew it, so she sat there and crossed her arms and her legs and she looked at one spot over my shoulder.
And as I watched, she lifted a fist to brush away a tear that clung to her eyelashes.
God damn, I was a fucking monster.
âI didnât go into your room last night because it would have been a mistake.â
âAnd this wasnât?â
âNo, it was. This shouldnât have happened,â I said.
She laughed so hard it sounded like a sob. And her face was turned so far away the tendons in her neck stood out. I could see her heartbeat. I watched her swallow.
âLook at me.â
âFuck you.â
âBrenna.â
âYou can manhandle me all you want, asshole, but you canât have everything.â She swallowed hard and then shook her head. And I knew what she was thinking. Because I was thinking it, too.
I would have given you everything.
I sat down next to her and she pushed herself away so fast, the feel of her against me barely registered.
âPleaseâ¦listen.â
âYouâve not given me a choice.â
âIâm going to be married, Brenna.â That made her look at me, her mouth open, eyes wide.
âHas it been announced?â she said through pale lips. âAre you engaged?â
âNo,â I said. And she sagged, relieved that she hadnât fooled around with a betrothed man. God, her honor, even now, was diamond bright. âBut I will be.â
âIn a few years.â
Remarkable that her words stung. That she didnât care that I would belong to another, as long as it wasnât soon, when the thought of her looking forward to seeing Sven again filled me with a black rage. It would be sooner than that. Far too soon for both of us. âI wonât sleep with you, Brenna. And marry someone else. Our lives are entwined forever. My wife will be your sister and I canâtâ¦disrespect you that way.
