Phoenix

I was getting used to waking up in Atlas's bed. The morning routine had become familiar—his off-key humming in the shower, coffee strong enough to wake the dead, the way he looked at me sometimes like he couldn't quite believe I was real.

"Morning," Atlas said, emerging from the bathroom with a towel around his waist, hair still damp.

"Morning," I replied, appreciating the view from his bed. We'd been alternating between my penthouse and his apartment, but honestly, I preferred his place. It felt more like home than anywhere I'd ever lived.

"Sleep okay?" He sat on the bed's edge, hand finding mine automatically.

"Better than okay," I admitted. The nightmares about Leo had finally stopped. "I've been thinking—"

"Dangerous," Atlas teased, but his expression was fond.

"About staying here more. Your place, I mean. Mine's closer to the office, but this feels..." I searched for the right word.

"Right?" Atlas suggested, leaning down to kiss me softly.

"Right," I agreed against his lips.

An hour later, we arrived at Station 19 together. The subtle shift in how the team treated me was becoming more obvious. Instead of polite inclusion, I was getting genuine integration.

"Phoenix!" Santos called out immediately. "Thank God you're here. My laptop's making this weird clicking noise, and I have no idea what's wrong."

"Probably a failing hard drive," I said, following him to his locker. "Let me take a look."

Atlas caught my eye and smiled, clearly pleased that Santos had come to me for help. It was such a small thing, but it mattered.

Santos's laptop was indeed dying a slow death. As I explained backup procedures and recommended replacement options, I noticed the whole team gradually drifting over to listen.

"So cloud storage is basically like having a safety deposit box for your files?" Santos asked.

"Exactly. Except the bank is a server farm, and you can access your deposit box from anywhere with internet." I kept my explanation simple and practical. "Atlas, remember that warehouse fire where the admin office got flooded? If they'd had cloud backup, they wouldn't have lost twenty years of records."

"See?" Atlas said to Santos. "Phoenix speaks our language now. No more incomprehensible tech babble."

"Hey," I protested. "My tech babble was always comprehensible."

"To other computers, maybe," Raven said, appearing with a thermal scanner. "Speaking of which, can you look at this? It's reading everything three degrees low."

I spent the next twenty minutes troubleshooting Raven's equipment while Orion discussed modifications to our medical sensor integration. Captain Varga appeared midway through, watching me work with obvious approval.

"Phoenix," he said when I finished. "Walk with me."

We headed to his office, and I felt that familiar flutter of anticipation. Good news or bad?

"Your integration with the team has been remarkable," Varga began, settling behind his desk. "Three weeks ago, you were an outsider with expensive toys. Now you're troubleshooting Santos's personal electronics and modifying our medical equipment. That's not consultant behavior—that's family behavior."

"This place..." I paused, trying to articulate it properly. "I've worked in corporate environments my whole life. I understand efficiency and profit margins. But here, I understand purpose.
