Chapter 18

Lorenzo

I leave Violet to clean up, taking a moment to gather my thoughts before joining my family. There are many, by the way, so many that I have to try to slow my mind down so I can process them all.

First. She’s pregnant.

How do I feel about that? Scared shitless. Ecstatic. Worried. Those are my first thoughts on the matter.

Scared, because damn, I believe every man panics a little when they hear those words. Being responsible for another human being, that will forever look to you for guidance, while he/she figures out this great big crazy world. Knowing that you will be the man in this little human’s life, who sets the bar for all other men who follow you. Should you screw it up, set the bar too low, that falls on your shoulders later when this kid turns out to be an unproductive member of society, or an idiot, or just lazy, or insecure. The list is endless, really. And well damn, that’s a lot to take on at twenty-three, when I’m still figuring out exactly what kind of man I am.

Ecstatic, because again, I believe every male also feels this once the panic fades. I got her pregnant. Me. I loved her just right and snuck one past the goalie. I will get the pleasure of watching her belly round as my child grows inside of her. I did that. We did that.

And after having gotten to experience a part of fatherhood with Char, I cannot wait to know how it feels to do it from the beginning. I love that little girl as if she were my own, have since the day I met her. Just like I already love this child who I know nothing about, and it almost feels weird, experiencing that kind of love so soon.

And no one can understand that really until it happens to them. Which explains why Antonio and Larkin took the loss of their first child so hard. Why my brother is being extra cautious with his wife this time around. To ensure he keeps both mother and child safe, in hopes to prevent harm from falling upon his family again.

Which is where the worry sets in. I worry for the safety of both of them. Maybe more than others might worry about that, considering the situation surrounding my family. Violet ran because her ex—if you can even call him that—is a mean son of a bitch. I have no doubt that he is going to come after her again once he learns we have returned. Come for his child, then do his best to once again use her to make her mother fall back in line. And I can’t let either of those things happen, because as the head of this family unit, it is my job to keep them safe, to protect them from the wolves circling us.

And while I felt protective before, now that Violet is pregnant, it is as if my protectiveness for them has increased tenfold.
