Ireach out in the darkness and wrap my finger around Charlesâ little hand. Itâs the middle of the night, and Iâm plagued by nightmares. I dreamed we were taken to Auction. I could hear my name called over the intercom, but when I got up, Charles was in front of me. I ran after him, ran after the bus but no matter how hard I tried, I wasnât fast enough. It went over a cliff into a fiery hell.
I wipe the wetness from my face. I donât want Charles to ever see me cry.
I grab the shovel off the wall, jumping into the pit. Weâve dug about three feet so far. Weâve broken a couple shovels. The deeper we go, the harder the ground becomes. Water helps, but it is challenging to get a bucket of water here without spilling it. And, of course, we need to keep some of it to wash our faces and hands.
I dig for an hour, exhausted by the time the sky lightens. Iâm beginning to think there is no end to the wall. I sit and stare at it.
If there is more to the world, then someone built this wall. Did they build it for us? For evil kids?
Movement, a shadow on the rooftop above me, gets me to my feet. I tilt my head back, searching for what I saw. I know someone was there. Were they watching me? Watching us? For weeks Iâve been feeling like Iâm being followed. Most times I think itâs Ruler, but if Tobias knew I was over here, he would have chained me to his bedpost by now.
I want to call out, to force them to show themselves, but whoever they are, theyâre gone.
I nudge Charles awake. I want to shower before school. Iâve sweat buckets too early because of the heat.
Itâs Reaping Day. As the months have gone on, and my understanding has gotten clearer, today is more terrifying than any other. Anyone is capable of being called to Auction, and no one is safe. Not me and especially not Charles.
âCanât we stay home?â Charles wonders as we leave the bathroom.
I wring my hair, and droplets of water sink into the sand, âSnatchers will come for you.â I was able to buy new clothes for the first time since Iâve been here. Though they are a little big, theyâre fresh and donât smell.
âThe Sky kids?â
âThe ones dressed up like ninjas. They take kids the teachers donât like and bring them to Auction. They only come out one day a month.â
âToday?â
I smile a fake smile, âToday.â
âScream.â Tobias is walking toward me briskly. Ruler and Kevin are on his heels.
âWhat do you want?â
Tobias doesnât say anything as he snatches my hand. I dig my feet into the ground, âLet go of me!â
He doesnât falter, yanking me along even as I twist like a kitten stuck in a ball of string. I smack at his fist and arm, but he continues stomping toward his house.
Charles is following, yelling, trying to grab for me, but Ruler pushes him to the ground, kicking at him.
