NEVER KISSED ANYONE WITH BLUE EYES BEFORE YOU
âYou're getting these brown eyes seeing color, it's so true
I never kissed anyone with blue eyes before you.â
Performed by Gwen Stefani
Written by Stefani / Tranter / Busbee
I was drunk. I couldnât remember the last time Iâd actually been this drunk. Maybe not since MaysonâI mean, AssholeâCole, and I had downed three bottles of champagne on New Yearâs Eve after Iâd turned twenty-one.
The dark wood panels of the bar blurred a little as I turned back to the pool table where I was stillâeven drunkâbeating the pants off Dalton. Dalton, the flirty cowboy who, if I squinted my eyes, looked enough like MaysonâAssholeâto ease my shredded heart.
I could pretend it was his hands that kept grazing my arm, my hip, and the exposed skin below my crop top. I was drunk enough that I wanted him to touch me. Not the cowboy, but the Asshole.
I risked a glance in his direction. He was sitting at the bar, but he hadnât taken his eyes off of me since Dalton had suggested we play. He wasnât smiling. Mayson hardly talked at all until Edie sat down next to him.
Damn.
I knew as soon as I said his real nameâeven in my headâinstead of the Asshole Iâd been calling him for months, Iâd weaken. Iâd cave. Iâd let him apologize. Iâd forgive him. But forgiving him would mean letting him back in. Opening my heart again. And I wasnât sure I could take it if he stomped all over it like he had before.
One night. Weâd had one incredible night. A night Iâd been longing for as much as I knew I shouldnât. It was so ridiculous. Falling for your older cousinâs best friend. Like the clichéd âbrotherâs best friendâ trope Iâd always disliked.
Dalton eased in and whispered close enough to my ear I could feel his warm breath on my skin. âAre we succeeding yet?â
I turned, and our lips were almost touching. âSucceeding at what?â
âMaking Mayson jealous. Making him regret whatever it is that went wrong between the two of you.â
âThereâs nothing between us,â I said with a confidence I didnât feel.
Dalton smiled. âSure, sweetheart. So, if I were to kiss you, youâd let me, and he wouldnât try to kick my ass?â
âIf you kiss me, youâre gonna get this pool stick shoved up yourââ
I was interrupted by his lips on mine.
They were there for all of two seconds before large hands pulled me from behind with such force I stumbled back into the male body tugging at me. Into Mayson whoâd always been muscle and mass and heavenly scent.
âWeâre done here,â Mayson said, and the barely controlled anger in his voice made me cheer. I wanted him angry. I wanted him angry because it was at least a different emotion than the sweet pleas heâd been giving me for months. The sweet pleas had felt like they were lacking the passion I wanted him to have on the subject of us.
Dalton extended to his full height, matching Mayson muscle for muscle.
