Now that she’s on my mind, I can’t help wondering if she needs coffee.

Thena: I’m almost done here. Want to meet downtown somewhere?

“Love to,” I write back.

And then we go back and forth a bit about streets and neighborhoods and rosé. Heat. Sweatpants. Tiny shorts. By the time the debates are done, I have only fifteen minutes to get where I’m going. When I text, I must stop to do it right, which means, progress is slow. She says she’ll be sitting outside.

I get this fluttery feeling in my belly when I see her. Mushrooms are weird. I think I’m doing that thing where I’ve misappropriated how good it should feel to see her. Sometimes I forget what the emotional output should be for a given interaction and my go-to is “you’ve loved this person your entire life.” But usually that happens with people I’ve at least known for a long time. Why would a stranger do this to me? Well, not a stranger. Although, there is so much I don’t know about Thena. She likes linen. That much is clear. And her thick red-brown hair is sculpted into French braids today. When she senses my approach, she jumps out of her chair and opens her arms, even though I’m not yet close enough to step into them. She waits and seems to forget a world is going on around her. I seem to have increased my pace almost as if I’m jogging. It hasn’t been that long since we met, has it? There’s that flooded volume again. Do I love her more than anything? Why have I pulled her against me like she’s just solved my life’s puzzle? We both seem to have forgotten who and where we are. She laughs and pulls back, eyes dazzling.
