Chapter 35

Oh, goody, there’s a strange car in the driveway when I get home. Personally, I’m getting a bit tired of all the sudden surprise visits.

I open the door and hear Mr. Alexander’s voice coming from the living room. Mom looks up at me, but it’s my teacher who gets up and comes over and grabs my arms to look at me. “Thank God,” he says, relief pouring over his features.

I make the snap decision that he must not have read my assignment yet. “I get that reaction a lot these days.”

I feel his warm hand pressing on my back, and he guides me to the nice couch this time and I sit. He joins me, eyes scanning me. “What were you thinking?”

I play dumb with an expertly tilted head. I’m good at that.

Mom chimes in with, “What do you mean?”

He looks back and forth between us, and I feel my heart sink in my chest. He’s going to tell her. My shoulders drop, and I part him a warning glance, but he faces Mom and says, “Your daughter was at the scene of the explosion.”

I open my mouth and put up my hands to forestall Mom’s blood-curling panic.

“You committed the crime?” she cries.

“What? No!” Now I glower at Mr. Alexander. “Thanks,” I snarl as I turn back to Mom. “No. I heard the bomb beeping when the school’s fire drill went off.”

“What?” they both ask, then Mr. Alexander takes control and says, “I smelled your scent in the room. Your troll scent. And Roderick’s and Reubal’s, as well. In dragon form. Our mortal enemies. Did they gang up on you? Did you fight them? Is that how the wall got smashed? Or was that from the bomb going off?”

I can only look at him like he’s completely lost his marbles. I’m sure my squinty eyes and curled lip reinforce my thoughts of his departure from sanity. “You are completely batty. Are you out of your mind?”

“You almost died,” he says, gripping my knee like he truly cares, which takes my annoyance down a dozen pegs.

“Hardly.” I study him, really study him. “Do you want to know what happened or not?”

His warm grip leaves my knee as he sits back. He takes a deep breath and seems to calm down a bit. “Yes. And please, I asked for your honesty the first time we met. I would ask that you continue to honor my request, as I will continue to do so.”

“Except for covering my true nature, I don’t lie.” I lick my lips and look at both of them and tell them exactly what happened, including The Shift and how my two new pals think I’m a Yeti. “They never saw my troll form, just my arms, but they know I’m a Demi, like them. They’ve known it since day one.”

“When you found their jewels for them.”

Now I laser in on him. “How did you know about that?”

He waves off my question. “Someone is rigging the school. I think I know why, but I don’t know who.
