My kids, Ben and Bella, cheering me on. It’s a massive boost knowing they are there on the day to support me

Even at a time trial in the Tour or Olympic Games, you are watching other people warming up and going up the start ramp to go through the same things as you. You are still sharing that experience. You take reassurance from that. You can say to yourself, ‘Just imagine how they are feeling; I’m really confident.’ But when you are doing the Hour, there is no one else. It’s just you on that track with 6,000 people who have come to see you succeed or fail.

As I got into the last ten minutes those three things became harder and harder to concentrate on. The banking/straight thing became so monotonous that I’d start wavering, my lap splits would start fluctuating as the fatigue set in and I looked at the lap board and forgot about the three things. You don’t see it from trackside, but when you are doing it it becomes tense. In a funny way, it was like driving yourself slowly crazy.
