Chapter 5

Dear Jack,

I hope you can understand why I had to do this. Last night was fantastic, even though it was wrong, and I’ll never forget it. I think it was just what we needed, don’t you? I never got a sense of closure after the divorce, but now I think I’m ready to move into the next phase of my life. Despite the rough patches here and there, we have a lot of good memories, and I don’t plan to forget them. I hope that someday you find your happiness too.

Holly

SHE READ OVER the note one last time before folding it in half and placing it on top of his folded clothes. She turned the coffee pot on for Jack, the gesture making her feel a little better about what she was doing.

Holly knew she was taking the coward’s way out, but she also knew that facing Jack wasn’t an option. Last night had brought up too many memories, too many feelings that she’d been determined to keep buried. Those feelings mingled with her guilt over having cheated on Lyle, creating one seriously foul mixture. It caused her stomach to churn as she exited the house, careful not to slam the screen door behind her.

She was getting married today. There really was no other option. As she slid into the driver’s seat of her car, she glanced up at her bedroom window. The curtains fluttered and her breath caught in her throat. He was watching her.

Forcing herself to turn the key in the ignition, Holly told herself that it was over. No matter how Jack had made her feel by coming back into her life again, she knew it was a pipe dream. Jack would never put her and Reagan before his flourishing career. He would continue leaving them behind in his pursuit of material things. It was not the sort of life she wanted any longer.

As she backed down the driveway, she forced her eyes away from the window and focused her mind on the day ahead. She’d messed up, but after today she could make it up to Lyle by being the best wife she could be. He would never have to know, and she would assuage her own guilt by lavishing him with attention and affection.

“I’m getting married today.”

Saying the words aloud gave her the strength to continue on down the street and around the corner.

She was getting married today.
