Droz turned off the television and laid the remote on his desk—very slowly and carefully. The last time he had seen those two men on the news, he had reacted impulsively. The broken television was not a major expense, but the need to clean up the glass and have it replaced was a disruption, and that was not acceptable. He had also gone down to one of his “special” rooms to work off his frustration with the new girl who had just been delivered. She was feisty enough, but he had been so angry that he was violent and had damaged her such that the doctor had to be called to patch her up. Afterward, he had instructed his men to take her to Bucharest and to put her out on the street. She was so frightened she had become useless to him. Fear was a good thing; it made them struggle more, but once it went past a certain point, they became docile, which offered no pleasure at all. Usually, that took three or four sessions; this girl had only lasted one. A waste and not to be repeated.

Jones had been in touch with Stone, who had already tried one thing—which was another mess. Jones had reminded him of the warning about haste. Bah. Jones was a pro, and Stone had been in the past, so he supposed he’d just let them run with it for now; Stone was apparently taking this personally, which was good; provided motivation. However, Droz had never relied solely on one direction of attack; he always had a backup.

So Droz sat and considered. Who did he know who was sufficiently bloodthirsty, not afraid of death, and hated the Americans and British enough? A sudden inspiration came, and Droz grinned. He knew just the people. It would be difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, but it could work. Jones would not like it; best not even mention it to him—offensive to his professional standards. This would not be easy; he did not do business with this group often; they were touchy and did not trust him. He would have to lay the groundwork carefully, make the prices so attractive they could not turn down the offer, which, of course, meant selling at a loss. It was a price he was willing to pay to avenge the slight he had suffered. And time, that he had as well.
