How to Help Your Teen Find Good Friends
It is very important to help your teen find and nurture good supportive friendships in their age group. Teens who have difficulties making friends often suffer from lowself-esteem and depression. If your teen exhibits any of these behavioral changes, it’s time to examine their social development by carefully monitoring what they're up to without being intrusive or appearing to be interrogating your teen. Check to see if he or she is having trouble making and keeping friends.
There are ways you can help your teen develop meaningful friendships subtly without antagonizing or embarrassing them. Offer to invite parents of other teens on a weekend trip with you and get your teen to mingle along with their kids. This is a good start for a shy teen to begin making friends and experience the pleasures of friendship.
Another way is to invite one or two of your teen’s closest companions to your home each week for group study session and prepare delicious meals for them. This is a great way to help your troubled teen make friends with the right people and prevent them from hanging out with the wrong group.
It is best to nurture a very close, emotional and strong bond with your teen so your efforts will appear sincere to them so you will not seem manipulative or have your actions perceived as an insult to their social inadequacies.
Another great way to help your teen make new friends is to enroll them in a new activity that helps them meet new people other than kids from school. It can be music lessons, language classes, sports such as archery, horseback riding, martial arts and more.
Find out what your teen’s special interests are. It is easier to find and develop friendships with good people that have the same interests and values when you have plenty of choices to begin with. Help your teen expand their circle of influence by helping them participate in as many activities as possible.
