Caldric set the three cups on the counter and popped the cork on the bottle of Tarolian brandy. Greebi was already sitting on one of the tall stools and Faylana was finishing wiping down the last of the countertops. All the dough was proofing. Frosting mixed. Rolls rolled and Knots knotted. All that remained was for a new batch of elven butter to be made. That was something Faylana did alone or with a little help from Greebi.

The bottle of brandy glugged as Caldric poured the three cups to the brim. He slid one over to Greebi and picked one up for himself.

“Faylana. Come over here. I want to make a toast.”

“Hmmm? Oh, yes, my love!” She untied her apron and joined her husband and Greebi. Caldric passed her a cup of brandy.

“I want to start by saying that we couldn’t have done this today without all the, well, craziness that happened before.” Caldric smiled and glanced at Greebi, then fixed his gaze on Faylana. He marveled at his wife’s beauty. It was no wonder every man desired her. Oh, how it thrilled him to share. “All of the things we’ve done together and apart from each other. All of our mistakes. It brought us here. To a new adventure that we can go on together. To new adventures.”

“New adventures,” agreed Faylana, bumping her cup against Caldric’s.

“New adventure,” agreed Greebi, stretching out to bump cups with Faylana and Caldric. “Is good. Big day. New adventure!”

“A big day,” agreed Caldric, laughing right up until he knocked back half a cup of Tarolian brandy. It was strong, herbaceous, and made his belly burn. Greebi howled and rocked on his stool. Faylana winced, but gamely gulped down her entire cup.

“My turn,” said Faylana. She grabbed the bottle of brandy and poured the three cups full again. “We have done better than we could have hoped today. We sold out of almost everything. But it took a lot of work and not every day will go so well. Together, the three of us, we make a good team. To the bonds of camaraderie.”

“And a bit more than that,” said Caldric with a wink.

“Yes, bit more!” laughed Greebi, giving Faylana a smack on her bottom.

“Oh!” she yelped, spilling a few drops of her brandy.

Caldric shot an angry glare at Greebi, but then he remembered the goblin’s recent loyalty and decided not to let anger spoil the moment. He laughed again and took a gulp of the brandy. Greebi and Faylana joined him.

The brandy warmed their faces and colored their cheeks. Greebi insisted on a third toast. Caldric nodded, seeing it as only fair, and poured the rest of the bottle into the three cups.

“Best sell, elf cakes,” said Greebi, looking adoringly at Faylana. “Not have elf cakes without Faylana. So toast is to most beautiful lady in all of world. With eyes as blue as pools and a smile so bright it—”

“Ahem,” said Caldric.

“To Faylana,” said Greebi, raising his cup.

“To Faylana,” agreed Caldric.

“Ohhhh, you’re too sweet,” giggled Faylana, looking between them both.
