Chapter 16 - Jane
While it wasn't unusual for me to wake up in an empty bed because Levi got up early for work, it was getting harder to resist the desire to have him there. I tried to dispel the slight disappointment, aware that dwelling on it would only aggravate my inner wolf.
But to my left on the nightstand, a small note from Levi was there to greet me. It read:
âIâll be swamped with work until later tonight. The pack is to go to you with concerns. Iâll be thinking of you.â
I practically swooned at the latter part of the note, but the prospect of being left to lead also made me nervous. I didnât entirely know what he meant, and given that being a Luna was new to me, I didnât know what to expect.
Still, I got up, walked through the empty house, and took my time appreciating my surroundings. Even if Levi didn't spend a lot of time at home, it seemed he had an eye for style, and whether it was bought or a new build, he certainly chose well.
Before I could feel too lonely in the house, the doorbell rang, and I was quick to answer it. I opened the door and found Nati on the other side with a kind smile.
"Good morning," she said, wearing an olive-green dress that billowed in the wind.
"Morning," I returned, thinking back to the note despite how lost I felt about it. "Do you need anything, Nati?"
"I actually ran into Levi in town while he was on a quick coffee run, and he told me about the note he left. He realized he wasnât as clear as he couldâve been and was too busy to explain it, so he asked me to clarify things a bit,â she said diligently.
"He said the others were to come to me. What does that mean?" I asked, completely unaware of what that would entail. I didnât know the first thing about solving pack-related conflicts.
"Well, as the alpha's mate, you are the second-in-command. It wouldn't be unusual for the others to go to you for help if necessary," she explained, seeming more than happy to give me pointers. "Normally, nothing too major goes on when Levi is gone, but it doesn't hurt to have a backup anyway."
"I suppose so," I managed, feeling the looming presence of that expectation. It sounded like a big responsibility for someone who didn't know how to lead anyone.
It was hard for me not to shy away from the idea, even though I should've known that. Even still, it came as a surprise.
"I know it seems like a lot to handle, but everyone here values your opinions and insight. I'm sure you'll handle it without any problems," she offered. "If you need any help, I'm not too far away."
While I wasn't new to being in a pack, I was completely ignorant of the issues others went to alphas and their Lunas about, and more specifically, how to fix them.
Since it was my new responsibility, I didn't want to mess it up.
