I left for school early the next day with the intention of catching Cody alone. I knew he usually arrived early, and it was the only way I could think of being alone with him. I had no idea why he went in so early every day and I didn’t care to know but I did know it was my best chance to talk to him without Taylor or his friends around.

Sure enough I found him near the football field when I arrived. He was alone and he looked surprised when he spotted me walking towards him. He looked around him, I assumed to make sure there was no one around to witness him talking to me.

“Hey” I said, testing the waters as I reached him.

“Hi.” There was that smile again. The smile that had always made me weak when we were younger.

“Can we talk?”

“Yeah. What’s up?” He was still smiling at me and it was making me nervous.

“Stop smiling like that.”

“Why?”

“Because I might start thinking you actually want to be my friend again.”

“Maybe I do want to be your friend again Brie.”

“Cody.”

“Okay” he said schooling his expression. “What do you want to talk about?”

“What are you doing?”

“Um….” He looked around confused. “Meaning?”

“Why are you suddenly being nice to me? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it but why?”

“Taylor asked me to” he replied simply.
