CHAPTER SIXTEEN
BRIDIE
I awoke to the smell of bacon and eggs. I hurried downstairs to find Cody in the kitchen cooking with Samuel and Katie. His mother didn’t cook and neither did his sister, but both he and Scott could cook.
Something to do with his Navy training.
“Morning, beautiful!” he said.
“Morning, beautiful!” Samuel echoed.
“Good morning!” I sang.
“Now, you just take a seat and leave everything to us men,” Cody said. “We got it covered.”
“Yes, Mom, we got it …?” Samuel looked at Cody.
“Cov…ered,” Cody said. “We got it covered.”
Samuel pointed at Cody. “What he says.”
Cody and I laughed.
“Well, okay, then!” I said. I didn’t need a second invitation to rest my butt.
After a leisurely breakfast, we sauntered down to the water, where Cody showed Samuel how to fly fish. “We’re gonna have trout for dinner,” he promised.
Samuel was having such a great time with Cody, that I wondered if he still remembered Scott.
We took walks and baked in the warm sun before we headed back to the cabin so Katie could take a nap and I could start dinner. (The trout Cody caught were too small, so Samuel and Katie threw them back into the water.)
As we did, Jenna texted me.
Jenna: Hows the holiday?
Bridie: great what time u coming
Jenna: I cant Im working told cody that on Wednesday
My eyes flew to look at Cody. He had lied to me that Jenna and Nicole would be joining us.
Cody looked at me. “Who is it?”
“Jenna,” I said.
He dropped his eyes. I continued staring at him. He looked at me again.
I waved my index finger at him.
Laughing, he dived at me and caught my index finger. “You wouldn’t have come if I told you the truth, right?”
I feigned anger.
He put his hands on either side of my face “You’re having a good time, aren’t you?”
“You're lucky I am, Mister.”
He laughed and hugged me to him.
“Are you having a good time?” I asked.
“I’m having the best time,” he said. “Seriously! One of my best holidays I’ve ever had.”
I believed him.
