Chapter Thirteen

Maria

Happiness wasn’t in the cards for me. That was something I believed whole−heartedly.

“It’s fine. I saw Gabriel this morning. No change. Haden is my friend, my best friend, that is why I’m here.” I tried to keep the clipped tone out of my voice, but I couldn’t contain the snippiness. I hadn’t talked to any of them in months. “I’m going to go sit over there. It was good to see everyone.” That wasn’t a lie. I was happy to see them, but they weren’t happy to see me. I stood, and Logan snatched my hand, stopping me from going in further.

“No, stay. We all need the support. With Gabriel, now Haden, it’s hard. We need each other right now.”

“Logan is right,” Lucy said. “I’m sorry for being a bitch. I don’t want the past to get in the way of what is happening now, which is the most important thing. Clean slate?”

Before I could open my mouth, a growling, pacing Godrick bumped into my shoulder, and it sent me tumbling forward. Logan caught me around the waist before I hit the floor, and his hand flattened on my stomach. Our eyes met, and I knew he saw the truth shining in mine as I stared at him. He kept his hand there, and the shock that wrinkled the side of his eyes faded and turned soft.

He set me back on my feet, but still didn’t say anything. That right there was what I missed most about Logan. His loyalty. He knew I didn’t want anything said, or I would have said it for people to know.

“Fuck, I’m sorry, Maria. I’m sorry,” Godrick sputtered, running his hand through his hair. I’d never seen him so out of sorts. His hair was up in all directions from all the tugging, and his eyes were bright red, but it didn’t look like he had been crying, just holding the tears back. “Are you okay?” he asked when he sat down next to Lucy and put a hand on her stomach. When he felt his baby inside her, his chest rose along with his shoulders as he took a deep breath, and when he exhaled, he seemed calmer.

“I’m okay,” I whispered, unsure of what to say or where to go now that the entire crew was here, and all eyes were on me. “Are you?” I questioned, wanting to get the attention off me.

“Yeah, I just didn’t think I’d have to deal with this again. I thought all those years ago would have been it. One heart transplant was enough, the chances of another one—”

I let out a tiny whimper and placed my hand on the beam next to me to hold myself up. “What do you mean, heart transplant? What’s wrong with him?”

Godrick lifted his head from his hands and tilted his head, giving me a look of confusion. “He didn’t tell you. Haden had cardiomyopathy. It’s genetic. We don’t know if that is what is wrong, but that’s all I know.
