Chapter 8

Malcolm sat in Ananda’s apartment waiting for her and Tracey to come back from their little excursion. He wasn’t sure where they went, but he knew it had to be serious to have them running out the house this time of night.

Looking down when his cell vibrated on his hip, he was instantly annoyed.

“What?” He listened to Merci for a second. “I don’t have time for this unless something is wrong with Caprice, if not I have to go.” He paused to hear what Merci had to say, “Where are you now? Okay. I’ll be there in three hours. Look, that’s the best I can do, you know I’m out the state right now. I’ll be there. Let my angel know that I am coming.”

“Hey.” Ananda said to Malcolm as she came through the door of her place and caught him placing his cell phone in his pocket.

“Hey. You get everything straight with Tracey?”

“Yeah. She’s as good as she’s going to be. What about you? You okay?”

“I’m good.”

“I’m sorry that I had to leave you like that.” Ananda pulled Malcolm in close to her, what can I do to make it up to you?”

“You can—” A knock on the door interrupted Malcolm’s sentence.

Ananda pulled away from Malcolm and walked toward the door. She knew it wasn’t Tracey because she had a key and she and Cameron were headed home to work on them. Ananda wondered who would be knocking on her door this late. Putting her head up against the door to look through the peephole she was surprised to see a woman holding a child in her arms and another one standing beside her on the other side.

“Who is it?” Ananda called out. The woman’s face wasn’t facing forward toward the peephole so Ananda couldn’t tell if it were someone she knew or not, but all of her friends knew not to show up unannounced at her place.

“Open the door it’s Merci. Tell Malcolm to bring his ass out here this second!” The woman yelled.

Ananda glanced toward Malcolm who was standing in the middle of her floor looking like a deer caught in headlights as he moved toward the door.

“Friend of yours I take it?” Ananda asked sarcastically wondering why a woman was banging on her door this hour of night asking for Malcolm who wasn’t even from this area.

Opening the door before Malcolm had a chance to reach it Ananda stared the woman up and down.

“Didn’t your mother teach you manners? Because mine did and I know better than to knock on a stranger’s door at this hour, or a stranger’s door period.”

“Oh please!” Merci said with attitude apparent in her tone and a sleeping Caprice in her arms and her ten-year-old daughter Tatiana beside her. “I could give two shits about you and what manners you have. Where is my daughter’s father?” Merci attempted to step past Ananda, but Ananda blocked her path.

“You got me confused. I didn’t invite you in. Try to walk past me again and you will be missing a leg.
