Chapter Five

Spoiler alert: I did regret it in the morning.

Not the sex. God, no, that was amazing. But the agreeing to carry the baby of my boss, who I barely knew? That was a mistake.

When I woke up on the couch, my bra still hanging somewhere around my ribs and my head pounding from the spumante hangover, I found myself wrapped up in Rick’s arms. He wasn’t lying on my chest anymore, but he was lying on his side to my right, holding me with both arms around my middle, pressing my hip to his stomach.

He was even gorgeous when he slept.

His hair was rumpled (due in part, I’m sure, to my grabbing it so much the night before), his face was pale, and his eyes were shut lightly, spilling his dark brown lashes over his cheeks. His lips were parted, and a soft, gentle, almost snoring sound was passing between them as I watched him in his carefree slumber.

Never in a million years would I have expected to see my arrogant, self-centered boss in such a vulnerable position. Everything had changed between us so quickly, and it hadn’t just started last night. When the explosion had happened at the office, he had dropped his previously insufferable persona entirely and made me think that he actually, truly cared about me.

But maybe it wasn’t me he cared about.

He had been talking about buying a yacht for his future family even before the accident, perhaps it was my uterus he was worried about, not me. Who knew how long he had been planning to ask me to be a surrogate! It had been obvious that he had only ever seen me as “woman” in an office full of men, so who was to say he hadn’t already been planning to take it a step further and use me for the one thing old-fashioned men thought women were good for.

“What’s wrong?”

I jumped as I looked back at Rick’s face. I hadn’t noticed he was awake. And watching me, apparently.

“I… nothing,” I lied, trying to smile.

He reached up with one finger and smoothed out a crease between my eyebrows. “You’re beautiful when you’re frowning too,” he murmured.

I felt my cheeks burn at the compliment. “Are you still drunk, sir?”

His other arm was still wrapped around me, and he twisted me around to face him. My bare breasts were against his bare chest, and I felt the fire from last night immediately rekindle in my loins. I could feel the gentle smile on his lips when he kissed me. “You don’t have to call me ‘sir’ anymore. Well, maybe just around the guys in the office.”

“Sorry, sir.”

He sighed in faux frustration and slid a hand down between my thighs. I instinctively pressed myself even closer to him, my body asking for more before my lips could make a sound, and he moved his fingers to the lips of my still-wet vagina. I wondered if he could feel the remnants of his come there from the night before.
