EDWARD

I was pleasantly surprised when Maddie popped by my office during her lunch break on Wednesday afternoon.

“What are you doing tonight?” she asked coyly.

“I didn’t have any plans, why?”

“Shannon has moved in with Matt early, so I’ve got the place to myself. I thought I could cook for you.”

A grin spread across my face. “That sounds fantastic. Thank you. Should I bring the wine and dessert?”

Maddie smiled back. “That’s perfect. Thank you.”

The rest of the afternoon at work passed much more quickly because I had something to look forward to, and when I was finally finished in the office, I hurried home so that I could change and freshen up.

I’d been to Maddie’s place countless times before to visit her and Shannon, but it felt different going there knowing this was a date. Being with Maddie made me feel like a teenager again, and as I drove across town, I was oddly nervous and excited.

Maddie greeted me at the door in a long kimono-like dress that was scandalously revealing and set my pulse racing.

Noticing my gaze on her, Maddie smirked. “Do you like it? I brought it especially.”

“I love it, but we best get inside before I tear it off.”

Inside the apartment, Maddie had decorated with candles and fairy lights, and soft music filled the air. She’d even gotten out the folding table she and Shannon normally only used for special occasions and had decorated it with a vase of pretty flowers.

The aroma coming from the kitchen was tantalizing, and a grin covered my face as I realized what Maddie was cooking for us.

“Do I smell seafood risotto? It’s my favorite.”

Maddie smiled. “Yes, I know. That’s why I cooked it.”

I followed Maddie through to the kitchen, where she was preparing clams, mussels, squid and langoustines to go into the rice that was already cooking on the stovetop.

I was impressed she’d gone to so much effort. Risotto wasn’t easy to cook at the best of times, and she’d brought all fresh seafood to go with it.

“You know you don’t have to go to all this trouble for me. I’d have been happy with steak and fries,” I insisted, as I handed Maddie the bottle of wine and cheesecake I’d brought for dessert.

“You spoiled me last weekend by taking me to Weymouth. I wanted to repay the favor. I have another surprise for you, too.”

I pulled Maddie into my arms and pressed my lips to hers. “Is it a glimpse of what’s under that dress?” I teased.

“Later,” she promised. “The actual surprise is that I booked us a weekend away at a bed and breakfast in Cape Cod. I know it’s not the same as a luxury resort, but you went to all that effort, like arranging the trip to Weymouth, and turning your store cupboard into a secret hideaway for us. I wanted to do something in return to show you how much I appreciate it, and how much you mean to me.”

I wrapped my arms more tightly around Maddie, and she laid her head on my shoulder.
