A lot of people want to get into music production, but they are unsure which part of the industry they fit into. They also don't know how to get from where they are to where they want to be. To advance in the music industry, you have to be aware of the requirements and the necessary steps. Examples of top careers in music production include

Music Producer

A music producer composes, records, arranges, and produce songs. Basically, they are involved in all aspects of music production. Like a film director, the music producer gets to decide which artist to record, how the instruments are played, the vocals to be featured in the song, and the location the song is recorded.

All major decisions concerning a song are taken by the music producer; therefore, he must be able to convey his vision of the final song to the other players involved in producing a song. Those players include audio engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, vocalists, and various other technicians.

A music producer also has to be proactive and plan in advance to prevent scheduling conflicts with recording session players. It will not do book an emergency recording session when the backup singers or lead vocalist is unavailable.

The job also requires great communication skills and the ability to understand logistics and budgeting. Generally, the duties of a music producer include the following.

⎯ Responsible for scheduling the studio sessions until all production work is done

⎯ In charge of the acquisition of instruments for production

⎯ Hires the necessary studio players and negotiates their fees

⎯ Monitors the spending and release of funds

⎯ Guide and coach musicians when necessary

⎯ Create quality sounds that fulfill both the producer's and the musician's vision.

⎯ Assist the sound engineers with the mixing and mastering process (in small record labels that are unable to hire a sound engineer, the music producer takes over the duty).

⎯ Makes sure that the entire production process is done within the budget.

The numerous duties listed above are only done by upcoming music producers. You won't have to carry out all these duties when you become a top-shot producer. Then you will have the funds to hire more studio players and experts to lessen your workload.

Educational Requirement of a Music Producer

A bachelor's degree in fine arts, sound engineering, and music production are beneficial but not compulsory for a music producer. An interest in music and passion for creating jams are the key qualities of a music producer. No one is going to reject you because you don't have a degree in music production or music business.

While it is not necessarily important that you have a degree, lack of experience in music production may be a deal-breaker when job-hunting. You can get experience by taking a course in a music school or interning in an established record studio.
