Left standing on the dock, Schooly continued running his same old gangsta moves. With songs like "I Wanna Get Dusted" and "I Shot da Bitch," his new major-label album, Welcome to America (Ruffhouse/Columbia), goes right over the top while going over old (school) ground. Other rappers have gotten rich off such stuff, but Schooly couldn't get half a crowd down to Limelight to catch a 10 p.m. show Thursday.

Despite his unwavering bad-guy image, Schooly's unpretentious energy as a performer contradicts the offense of his rhymes; other than wearing shades, he made no effort to portray the coldhearted thug his songs describe. Breaching convention further, he brought a solid seven-piece band — a pretty radical move for a hardcore rapper. Sharing microphone chores with Sic'nin Cheese and a female vocalist, Tamika (who did more dancing than singing), Schooly, chanting as much as rapping, performed most of his current album. Most of the songs had basic beats, but at times the music broke out: "I Know You Want to Kill Me" hit a driving funk groove, and "Welcome to America" adapted rock style with a 3/4 tempo and a real chord progression.
