The orchestra’s Pacific crossing was troubled. After a stormy landing in Honolulu, low fuel forced an unscheduled stop at Wake Island. The weather at the final destination, Osaka, was so bad that the flight was diverted to Nagoya, after which the trip continued by car, a three-hour drive. Scheduled to arrive in Osaka at five in the evening, the orchestra pulled in at 1 a.m. and found a champagne reception waiting. Krips was dissuaded from scheduling a rehearsal for nine that morning.

The next evening, the orchestra opened the Osaka International Festival. The audience in San Francisco’s sister city loved the performance, a reaction repeated along the way in Hiroshima, Nagoya, Nagano, and Chiba. Although Tokyo was more reserved, the tour was a great morale booster and gave the orchestra a sense of its artistic strengths. Krips was delighted. In his memoirs, he proudly quotes Hans Pringsheim, chief critic of Osaka’s English-language press, who said that, of the many US orchestras that had visited Japan, he believed the San Francisco Symphony’s sound closest to that of a European ensemble. Neither could Krips resist including the Los Angeles Times report that a noted Japanese conductor, Fuzo Sotoyama, had said, “Our ears have been accustomed to the best, but what we heard was even better.” Programs included Viennese classics from Haydn to Bruckner, but also music of Copland, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, and Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.
