The Inevitability of Musical Mixing

Music hybridisation is part of the wider process of cultural hybridisation occurring through immigration, assimilation and acculturation and it has a very long history (Lipsitz 1994). The extensive legacy of music forged through mixing different sounds together is undoubtedly because music is an exceedingly mobile cultural form, in fact probably one of the most malleable and mobile of all cultural forms and more predisposed to fusion and mixing (Inglis and Robertson 2005; Taylor 1997). The majority of participants have very positive perceptions of the social and symbolic power of music, believing it to be the most significant cultural form given its communicative role between individuals, communities and nations. Additionally, because of the mobility of sound itself and music's interactive qualities, musical change is viewed as inevitable. Ray (Consumer) adheres to the view that the particular qualities of music elevate its potential for exchange: “I think music lends itself to an exchange of ideas and crossing of styles. I mean it's a language that can be understood by anybody who plays any instrument or sings”. The ‘universal language’ of music is understood by Ray to enable a broader scope for social interaction and communication. Rachel suggests that the social dimension of music distinguishes it from other artistic forms such as painting, for instance.

That's why I have a problem with painting because it's very dif cult to share painting. It tends to be a bit ivory tower, you go into this shrine or gallery or whatever and it's kept separate from you and you're not allowed to touch it and it's not intimate in the way that music can be intimate and shared. (Rachel, Consumer)
