CHAPTER ELEVEN
Esperanza
Itâs been nearly a week since I was attacked by Jamal. I stayed home that entire weekend afterward and Dag ended up staying Friday night and Saturday night. He even offered to stay on Sunday night too, but I told him I was fine and that I doubted Jamal would come back. The truth is I wasnât sure if heâd end up showing his face again. If anything, him attacking me showed me the man I fell in love with all of those years ago wasnât the man who I went to dinner with. Jamal changed and it wasnât in a good way.
By Monday I knew I needed to keep myself busy with work so thatâs what Iâve been doing all week. Iâm sticking to the same schedule for the most part, however I havenât gone back to the gym yet. My sides are still sore from being kicked so much and there is a bruise around my neck. Iâve been wearing outfits where I can put sashes or gaudy accessories around my neck to cover it up. I pray within the next few days the bruising will go away.
The day after I was assaulted I had Dag drive me out to the pharmacy and I picked up a Plan B pill. Iâm not on birth control and I havenât been for a couple of years now. The hormones in the daily pills were wreaking havoc on my body and made me feel borderline insane some days. I knew I needed to grab an emergency contraceptive so I did. Dag walked in the pharmacy with me and the woman behind the counter looked so confused. I guess a lot of women asking for the pill are younger, not women in their thirties. He even walked me back out to my car and drove for me.
I took the pill and we went to get some drive thru food. I was craving Bojangles so I got my usual a three piece chicken meal with a biscuit, green beans, and their famous macaroni and cheese. Their sweet tea is the best and Dag ended up getting a meal as well. He got an eight piece chicken meal just to himself, which is typically marketed as a family meal. I had a hard time not laughing at him when we got back to my place and he tore into his food. He ate every single bit of what he ordered like it was nothing. All I could think was how does he eat that much and still look as good as he does?
Now itâs Wednesday and Iâm finishing up my work day. A large portion of my job is responding back and forth to client emails. Rosie handles a large portion of that although there are some days where she has to forward the emails over to me to answer. I am lucky to have her. Without Rosie, I know Iâd be working myself into an early grave.
Earlier this week she noticed the
