Chapter twelve

As Sybil and Elsie left the beer tent, the cool December air brushed against their cheeks. The festive atmosphere of the town's Christmas celebration swirled around them, but their minds were occupied with the mystery of Mr Penton's sudden death and the unexpected connection to Vivian. Elsie turned to Sybil with a thoughtful look.

"Sybil, do you think Vivian might know something that could link her death and Mr Penton’s?"

Sybil pondered the idea as they walked. "It's possible. I think it's worth asking her some more questions. Maybe there's a piece of evidence or a detail that could connect the two deaths."

Elsie nodded in agreement. "Let's head back to the B&B and chat with her before we open the Christmas stall."

Elsie's worry became more apparent as they approached the B&B. She looked at Sybil with a furrowed brow, pushing her blonde hair over her ear.

"Sybil, I’ve overheard some gossip in the beer tent and around town,” she admitted. “No one really knows what happened, but there are rumours about Mr Penton. People are talking about his sudden death, especially so close to Christmas. They think it's a bad omen."

"Elsie, you know how people love to speculate about such things. I wouldn't pay too much attention to it,” Sybil reassured, trying to dismiss the superstitions.

Elsie sighed, looking uneasy.

"I know it's worrisome, but that's all the more reason to solve this mystery as quickly as possible. The sooner we find answers, the sooner these rumours will die down."

Elsie nodded, her concern still lingering. As they reached the backyard of the B&B, they found Arthur playfully exploring the garden while Vivian gazed at the chapel's steeple. Sybil introduced Elsie to Vivian, who greeted her with an exuberant smile.

"Hello! So nice to meet another friend," Vivian said, her ethereal presence emanating warmth.

“Nice to meet you too, Vivian. Enjoying the garden?”

“Very much. I never had one in London, just some rail and window boxes at my flat,” Vivian admitted, smiling at Arthur as he stalked something.

"Vivian, why don't you come inside with us?" Sybil asked, motioning toward the kitchen door of the B&B.

Vivian's laughter was infectious. "Don’t want to spook the neighbours! Lead the way, ladies."

Once inside, they settled into the cosy sitting area in the kitchen. Elsie tried to keep the mood light, engaging Vivian in conversation.

"Vivian, tell us about your love for Mr. Penton."

Vivian beamed at the mention of her beloved. "Oh, yes! Carlisle and I were in love, even though I was married to my husband for ten years. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate him, but the passion and connection weren't there. And we never had any children, you see."

"Did anyone know about your relationship? Did you ever tell anyone?" Elsie asked, smiling kindly at Vivian as the three sat around the small wood stove.

Vivian chuckled, shaking her head. "No, not a soul. Not even our coworkers suspected. We kept our love a secret. It was our little world, just the two of us."

Sybil and Elsie exchanged glances, realising the significance of what they had learned.
