The full business of the conference started properly next day, and a succession of learned and expert speakers ascended the stage to deliver their papers. While spouses, partners and family members set off on a trip to Berwick, those official guests who had stayed overnight took their leave and the hotel staff moved in to clear their rooms. In the main conference hall, meanwhile, the delegates declared themselves entranced by, and supported with thunderous acclamation, presentations on Roman Quarries at Gebel Dokan, Furnaces and Hypocausts at Vindolanda, and the Role of Ritual Vessels in Celtic Liturgy. The discussion groups that evening were intense in their enthusiasm, and erudite conversations continued in the bar until the early hours of the morning. The observant noted that some of the unattached delegates had begun to pair off late in the day, ostensibly to carry on learned discussion, but the cynical at the conference suggested that more carnal matters were probably foremost in their minds.

The following morning there was an excursion to the Roman Wall for the hangers-on while a professor from Denmark explained in a thick accent the archaeological conclusions he had drawn from a chariot burial at La Gorge-Meillet in north-west France. Exuberant sessions on Animism and Zoomorphic Monsters, Symbolism and Imagery, Miniaturization, and Micropalaeontology followed. The last was somewhat marred by the performance of Bernard Hewlett who — clearly in a bad temper about something — created an unprecedented disturbance when from the floor he started an argument with the distinguished presenter on the stage. It began in a civilized enough manner but when the presenter continued to disagree with Hewlett the discussion became angry, heated, and abusive. The evening discussion sessions were also diverted by a snappish confrontation between the chairman and secretary of the conference. The Norfolks were clearly not seeing eye to eye, and it was obvious that the discussion, though purporting to be academic, had undertones of marital fury.

All was much calmer on the third day of the conference, as was fitting for its conclusion. There was some evidence of boredom as delegates began to drift away in the early afternoon, making the transparent excuse that they had a long way to drive, but the presentations on Ambiguity and Obscurity in Cult Expression, and Skeuomorphic Decoration of Iron Age Axe-shafts, did retain the interest of the more dogged among the enthusiasts. Colin Norfolk’s closing conference address was delivered to a half-empty auditorium.

Rooms were cleared, baggage packed, farewells taken, bills for extras paid. The cars left one by one, and the small army of cleaners descended on the rooms to prepare everything for the next inhabitants of the country club. They began to arrive that evening: a golfing convention from the Midlands, armed with clubs, a determination to enjoy themselves, and an optimistic conviction that this year they would achieve far better cards than they had previously managed. All would be proven the following day.
