Chapter Twenty-One

Karb looked at his watch. It wasn’t like Capobianco to be late, and he wondered if she might have swung by the rehab center to check on Pedersen. He reminded himself that he needed to do that too. Dr. Malone would want him to, and he’d like to visit his friend without being told that he should.

While lost in his thoughts, he didn’t notice Capobianco stomping into the office, so he was startled when she threw her purse on her desk and exclaimed, “God damn her!”

He wasn’t used to seeing her this angry. He’d seen her frustrated before, as well as being upset and occasionally emotional but never completely pissed off like this. It was usually he who was angry, so he found this change in dynamics somewhat amusing. Doing his best to keep the smirk off his face, he asked with feigned sweetness, “Good morning, Capo, what’s shaking?”

Detective Capobianco gave him a stare that suggested he was lucky she did not have a knife in her hand. Now a sly smirk was starting to appear.

“That fucking bitch! I can’t believe she did that to me.”

Karb rarely called her ‘Carol’, generally preferring to just call her Capo. In this moment, however, he realized that using her first name would drive her crazy. It was not his nature to tease people, but he was beginning to understand why some people enjoyed it.

“Carol, is it safe to assume you’re not talking about Debbie?”

“Fuck you, Bill, and wipe that fucking grin off your face!”

She sat down and repeatedly squeezed and loosened her fists, while slowing her breath.

“I almost called you yesterday afternoon but, well, I just really didn’t want to talk to you.”

“Well, that’s sounds fair enough. So, what’s got you all riled up this lovely morning?”

“That fucking Meg. She screwed us over.”

Karb sat up straight. He knew that Meg and Capo were friends, so Meg must have done something big to get Capo this upset.

“You know how I was supposed to talk to Wilkerson yesterday afternoon?”

“Yeah, what happened?”

“Well, I got there, and his assistant said that he had already met with Detective Carol Capobianco and that Wilkerson was now out at a client meeting. I showed her my badge and I finally figured out that Meg had pretended to be me and questioned Wilkerson. The assistant said that she had pissed him off and that it was unlikely that he’d voluntarily speak with me.”

Karb nodded and said, “Interesting, impersonating a police officer is a felony. Maybe it’s time we clipped her wings a bit. What do you think?”

Capobianco loved the idea, other than the fact that it would make her and the whole department look like fools. It wouldn’t take much to push the captain over the edge when it came to Meg, and she wasn’t sure if she was ready to do that…yet.

There was a knock on the wall just behind Capobianco’s desk. “I’ve got a peace offering.”

Standing there was Meg with three cups of coffee from Starbucks. Capobianco stood up, looking as if she was ready to punch her.
