Chapter twenty-two

THE NEXT CALL guaranteed itself as the most important conversation of Josh’s life. That spoke volumes for a man who negotiated for a living the lifelong confinement and loss of freedom of human beings. In a handful of hours, George’s closest support system was on a time-sensitive mission to tip the scales in their favor, as slightly as it might be. And it would start with the next call.

Josh’s first thoughts: Besides Sam, who else knew about the notebook—other than the kidnapper, of course? And how did the kidnapper know about the notebook? Did the notebook contain enough information to allow the crook to locate the treasure? By itself, most likely not; otherwise, George would’ve found it by now. Perhaps it contained the missing piece to a bigger puzzle, solving a twenty-year-old riddle.

Sam raced to the District Attorney’s Office, his old stomping ground that had since been refreshed with a younger breed of altruistic lawyers, eager to save the world, ridding it of one criminal at a time. Despite years since his retirement, Sam never strayed far from his roots at the D.A.’s office.

Having mentored the current D.A., Nathan Jesper, back when the future politician had first joined the office, Sam never went more than a few months without dropping in to say hello. He’d enjoy a donut and coffee in the break room sharing war stories with the younger armed forces of the criminal courts and provided a sounding board to the D.A.—assuming the latter couldn’t get a hold of George for advice.

As a bonus during his routine visits to his old workplace, Sam couldn’t get enough of District Attorney Jesper’s incessant quotations from his favorite movie, A Few Good Men. His Oscar-winning imitation of Jack Nicholson’s character, Colonel Nathan Jessup, was uncanny, nailing every nuance down to his intensely eyed scowl. Not surprisingly, it was in sharing a nearly identical name to the iconic character that initiated and fueled the highest-ranking prosecutor’s cinematic infatuation.

Kristen was tasked with a desk job. A master of legal research, she holed herself in the comfort and safety of their deadbolted B&B room and clicked away on her laptop. Browsing old newspaper articles covering the investigation and prosecution of the Gold Scammer, digging up excerpts of the court transcript of his trial, reading the court opinions of his appeals grasping at straws for some judicial error in hopes of overturning his conviction. She scanned for red flags, looked deeper for the convict’s connections, and scrutinized searching for the slightest of clues.

With the assistance of a mild hangover and all the stress and panic of the early morning revelation, Kristen hadn’t realized that her phone was missing. And with her face buried in her laptop, she didn’t figure to do so anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Josh searched for the holy grail. Having raced to George’s cabin, he tiptoed a fine line by driving so fast that it almost slowed him down permanently, as he was inches from wrapping the rental around a bristlecone pine, nearly replacing its dangling tree-shaped air freshener with the real thing.
