THE FOLLOWING DAY, while looking over data on the case at his log cabin, Garrett got word about a disturbing text the ISB tip line had received in relation to the Blue Ridge Parkway killings. The National Park Service routinely received hundreds, if not thousands, of tips from the public annually on various crimes and otherwise suspicious activities that took place in national parks. Every one of these was taken seriously and, when appropriate, investigated. Normally, he would have passed this off to local park rangers. But upon being sent and reading the text, it obviously merited his own attention, in light of the investigation underway.

I’m the man you’re looking for. I killed those women with my trusty survival knife, then dumped it. If you want to talk, I’m ready. —Blue Ridge Parkway Killer

Garrett felt a chill at the casualness of the text message from a purported killer. Was this truly their unsub? Had guilt eaten at him like an insidious cancer so he was ready to turn himself in and atone for his crimes through the judicial system? Identifying himself as Special Agent Sneed, he texted the person back, asking for more details. The suspect responded with another text.

All I can tell you right now is I stabbed them multiple times after catching them off guard. The park ranger put up more of a fight but still ultimately succumbed to my blade like the first victim before I ran off into the woods. I’m being straight with you.

Garrett sipped on coffee thoughtfully. Sounds like someone who was actually involved in the homicides and needed to get this off his chest, he mused, while still remaining skeptical. Was this simply an attention-seeker who was merely repeating public information or the real deal? If this was indeed their unsub, he was likely using a burner phone to avoid being traced back to his location. They needed to bring him in to further check out or dismiss his story. Garrett asked the man for his name.

You can call me Sean.

Garrett suspected it wasn’t his real name, but it was a start in establishing a dialogue. He texted Sean for a face-to-face meeting, expecting him to reject this out of hand. Instead, Garrett was shocked at what came next.

I’m ready to turn myself in, Agent Sneed. Just tell me when and where.

Not willing to look a gift horse in the mouth, in case this was their serial killer, Garrett put him to the test by asking that he report to the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office at noon. When Sean agreed, Garrett immediately phoned Ray Pottenger and informed him that the person of interest in the case was reportedly set to arrive his way in an hour.

Pottenger made arrangements to that effect, accordingly. “We’ll see if he shows.”

“I’ll be there, if he does,” Garrett assured him.

He then called Madison. “Hey.”

“Hey.” He could tell that she was driving and had him on speaker phone.

“Got some news.” Garrett told her about Sean using the tip line and the noon meeting at the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
