CHAPTER 14
Royalty Amongst Us
FEELING A FAR SIGHT lower than simply downcast, I had only just made my way back upstairs to my bedchamber when another rap sounded at the door. Tilda went to answer it.
Surprisingly, my guest this time was a smiling Mrs. Crumble who stepped into the room carrying what looked to be a sampling of items one might use to decorate a bonnet.
âI gathered up a few things I thought your kitten might like to play with, Angel.â
âOh.â My smile was weak as I accepted the cluster of colorful feathers and assortment of somewhat tattered silk flowers that might have, indeed, once graced the brim of a bonnet. âThank you for your thoughtfulness, maâam. Little Georgie will enjoy chasing the feathers and batting at the flowers.â I handed everything off to Tilda, who took the cast-off finery without a word and turned to enter her own room, where I assumed my kitten lay napping.
âI also wanted to invite you to join my guests on our jaunt to the Cotswold Caves this afternoon, dear. We leave right after luncheon. However, if you do not wish to come, I fully understand. I expect it will be a tiresome outing. The caves are dank and musty-smelling, and to say truth, I have my doubts that anything of a preternatural nature will show itself. In addition,â she added, âit is a considerable distance there and back. Judging from the look of the sky today, our little group could very well encounter a rain shower before we return. Perhaps you would rather stay here and rest?â Her eyes were a question. âThis is to be a long day, what with the séance tonight and all. Oh . . . I very nearly forgot.â
She reached into her pocket and withdrew several slips of paper. âI made a proper list of my guestâs names and the name of the person each one is hoping to contact tonight. I thought it might help you prepare for what lies ahead.â She handed me the sheaf of pages.
Again, I nodded, albeit tightly. âThank you, maâam. If you do not mind, I believe I will remain here this afternoon and . . . study the list. I do not wish to embarrass you this evening by being unprepared.â
Mrs. Crumbleâs head shook. âOh, my dear. You will not embarrass me. Not at all. However, I do hope you will join us for dinner tonight. I wish you to address the group and relay every single thing that occurred last night upon the stairs when you met up with the Crumble House Ghost.â She laughed. âI daresay after hearing of it, the stairwell will be crowded long into the night what with everyone wanting to witness the exact same phenomena for themselves.â
Still smiling, she reached for the door latch. âAfter all, to actually encounter a ghost or apparition in the flesh, so to speak, is what our society is all about. Once word gets out that there actually is a Crumble House Ghost, I daresay, visitors to my home will increase by ten, perhaps, twentyfold.
