CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Molly paid no mind to the snow that began falling early that morning other than to think how beautiful it was and how she would love to be snuggled before the fireplace at home with Chris as the flakes accumulated. It continued snowing steadily during the day, closing schools after the children were served lunch so that the day didn’t have to be made up later.
Most of city hall emptied out early due to workers nervous about driving in the deepening snow or parents suddenly thrown off schedule by having children home early. Eric had been among the first to slink out the back door with no explanation to anyone. Even Gary was leaving early to drive his girlfriend home since this was her first snowfall; being a native of Florida had not prepared her for winter driving. Gary loved it; it would give him a chance to prove why he needed a full-size, four-wheel-drive pickup.
“Are you sure you don’t mind if I leave?” Gary stopped in the hall outside Molly’s door as he put his jacket and gloves on. “Tamika is out today. It leaves no one to pull data for you.”
Molly waved him on. “I’ve done all my map work before. I can do it again. We’re only talking about a few hours here. I actually enjoy playing with the GIS datasets when you guys aren’t watching my every move.”
He grinned. “Promise you won’t crash the system? I haven’t done backup tapes since the first of the week.”
“I will try my best not to corrupt the data. Who am I kidding? I probably won’t budge all afternoon unless it’s to go to the side of the building and watch the cars slide down the steep slope of the street.”
“You’re okay to get home?” Gary asked.
Molly rolled her eyes. “What do I drive?”
“A Jeep.”
“Where was I raised?”
Gary grinned. “Okay, Ms. Michigan, I get your point. Call me if you need me whether you’re stranded with GIS or snow, and I know who to call if I need help with driving.”
“Or your girlfriend.” She smirked appropriately. “Just go.”
He threw the long end of his scarf over his shoulder with an exaggerated flip as he walked away.
Molly smiled—nice guys were few and far between. She settled in with the set of plans she was reviewing for compliance with city design standards. It never failed to amaze her that consultants charged their clients thousands of dollars for relatively simple engineering or architectural drawings and usually made the same damn mistakes every time.
Molly heard the hall door and glanced to see who was coming back for something. She couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw Donna Brooks quickly walk past her door without stopping to speak.
Molly counted back. It had been two months since Donna resigned. None of them had any response from phone or e-mail messages sent to her. Molly had taken that to be a bad indication of how the new job was going.
Molly listened. Donna went into Jack’s office and closed the door.
