Chapter Fifteen

“Are you okay?” James asked Lori after Todd left. He’d helped her clear the table, then followed her back into the kitchen.

“Fine,” she said, her back to him.

“I forgot about your dinner with your stepmother tonight. I’m sorry. I hope I’m not making you late.”

She turned in his direction, avoiding eye contact. “She cancelled. Something came up.” He said nothing. Finally, she looked at him. “She’s scaring me.”

He nodded. “But maybe it has nothing to do with Billy Sherman. At least now we know why Billy went out that night. We just don’t know who he was following or why.” He sighed. “I’m sorry. I feel like I never should have started this.” She didn’t exactly disagree with her silence.

“Hey,” he said. “How do you feel about a big juicy rib eye out at the steak house? I’m buying.”

She smiled and he could tell that she was about to decline when his cell rang. He held up a finger, drew out his phone and, seeing who was calling, said, “I need to take this. Hello?”

“Mr. Colt?”

He smiled to himself. No one called him Mr. Colt. “Yes?”

“My name is Connie Sue Matthews. I heard you have taken over your father’s private investigations firm and that you’ve been asking questions about Billy Sherman’s death.”

“That’s right.”

“You probably know I was the one who found the body that morning. Could I stop by your office? I know it’s after hours, but it’s the only time I’m free this week. I might have some information for you.” She lowered her voice. “I don’t want to get into it on the phone.”

He shot a look at Lori. He’d been looking forward to that steak but had really been looking forward to dinner with her. He hesitated only a moment, hoping Lori would understand. If this woman had any information for him... “You know where my office is?”

“Yes, I can be there in a few minutes.”

“Use the back entrance. I’ll see you then.” He disconnected and looked across the room at Lori. Only moments before he was mentally kicking himself for digging into his father’s unsolved case and here he was cancelling his dinner plans because of it. What was wrong with him? “I’m afraid I’m going to have to postpone that dinner invitation.”

“Bad news?” she asked, looking genuinely concerned.

“No, maybe just the opposite.” He could only hope.
