No more liquor. Never again. My head rang and I kept feeling like Iâd made a bad transformation. Why else would my tongue be three times too big for my mouth? But I knew exactly why: the tiny chemical foot soldiers in ethyl alcohol had wreaked havoc through my body, rerouting water from my brain, slowing down my neurons, and leaving me with a general feeling of death.
I considered myself lucky, given how Rubyâs night had ended. I couldnât stop thinking of her, how sheâd gotten us out of Cowardâs party alive, and that kiss...
And, oh, everything started to spin again.
What had happened to my promise? I told myself I wouldnât ever kiss as a stranger, but then Iâd never counted on a girl like Ruby.
Youâll figure it out later, I told myself, wincing up at the hospital building in the bright morning lightâphotosensitivity, another aftereffect. Just get through the day, and pray itâs a quiet one.
âFresh body! Just came in.â Dr. Keene tossed me a notebook the moment I stepped inside the morgue, then breezed past me on his way to the basement autopsy lab. âCome on! I need you to take notes.â
Sighing, I shucked off my coat and swallowed another bout of nausea as I followed him down the stairs. While Iâd been busy pulling reports and researching data, Dr. Keene had spent his time spinning up funds for our research into the angel killer. We now had a dedicated corner in the morgue overrun with files, but there was only so much we could do without another body, which was why, when I caught up with Dr. Keene in the autopsy room, he practically tap-danced across the marble floor.
âHealthy, middle-aged man dead in an alley!â Dr. Keene sang, gesturing to the body stretched out on the slab, and there he was. The man from Herman Cowardâs party, the one whoâd tried to kill me and Ruby, who Iâd eventually left, half frozen in the slush. With his body stripped clean of clothes, the puncture wound in his neck stood out like an angry red sting.
âItâs one of ours, Rosewood, Iâm sure of it!â Dr. Keene rubbed his hands together, looking down at the corpse. âNow letâs get in there and see whatâs gummed up his works.â

Cyanide. Fast-acting, deadly cyanide. As soon as we opened him up, he spilled his secrets. Dark, purplish-black blood. The veins leading to the heart stretched wide and strained. Cyanide killed by slipping into the bloodstream and taking the place of oxygen. As the body searched desperately for air, the heart beat faster, faster, faster, which spread the poison through every tiny vein, every muscle, every organ. The victim died gasping for breath, suffocated from the inside.
âHave those typed up and on my desk by the end of the day,â Dr. Keene said, nodding at the notes as he washed his hands. âSheâs getting bolder, Rosewood. Weâve got to alert the authorities. Thereâs a monster loose in this city, and weâre
