WITH THAT DECIDED, the trio made their way to the residence of Albert Humphries. The man himself opened the door with an air of wary curiosity, his eyes darting back and forth between Jessie and George.
"Miss Harper, Mr. Jenkins," he greeted them, his voice hesitant. "What brings you to my humble abode?"
"Mr. Humphries," Jessie began, holding up the antique silver mirror. "We found this and wondered if you might recognize it."
"Ah," Albert's face paled, his hands trembling as he took in the sight of the mirror. "You see, I was accused once before, in a similar case. But I assure you, I was innocent then and I am innocent now."
"Tell us more about that accusation, Mr. Humphries," George urged, his tone firm yet sympathetic.
"Very well," Albert sighed, his shoulders slumping. "It happened years ago, in another town. A woman was murdered, and they found a silver mirror like this one near her body. They accused me, but there was never enough evidence to convict me. I've tried to put that dark chapter behind me, but it seems it has followed me here."
"Have you received any threats?" Jessie asked, her voice laced with concern.
"Indeed, I have," Albert admitted, casting a furtive glance over his shoulder. "Anonymous letters warning me to leave town or suffer the consequences. I fear someone is attempting to frame me for this ghastly crime, just as they did before."
"Rest assured, Mr. Humphries," Jessie said firmly, her eyes locking onto his. "We will get to the bottom of this and unmask the true villain. Nothing will deter us from our pursuit of justice."
"Thank you, Miss Jessie," Albert replied, his voice wavering with gratitude. "I only hope that the truth comes to light before it's too late."
With renewed vigour, Jessie, George, and Khan left Albert's residence, their minds racing with the implications of their discovery. Each clue brought them closer to the truth, even as an unseen hand sought to steer them off course. But Jessie Harper would not be so easily led astray, and she vowed to herself that the killer's identity would be unveiled, no matter the cost.
"Next stop, Geraldine Finch," Jessie announced as they strode away from Albert Humphries' residence. "She's our best bet to find any information on this peculiar mirror." George nodded his agreement, and Khan flicked his tail in anticipation.
