Chapter Eleven

Itrudged up the steps of the Sunny Honey B&B, letting out a long, weary sigh, allowing some of the tension to seep out of my body. The entryway was dimly lit, casting long shadows across the antique furniture and giving the place an air of mystery that, on any other night, I might have found charming.

I was about to head up to my room when a furry missile launched itself at me from the darkness. I let out a startled yelp that quickly turned into a chuckle as Sneaker wound himself around my ankles.

“Hey there, partner,” I cooed, bending down to scoop him up. “Miss me?”

He responded with a purr that rumbled through his entire body, pressing his head against my chin. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling some of the day’s stress melt away as I cradled the warm ball of fur.

“At least someone’s happy to see me,” I murmured, scratching behind his ears. “Though I bet you’re just hoping for an extra treat, aren’t you?”

As if in response, he let out a small “mrrp” and jumped out of my arms, padding towards the living room. I followed, drawn by the soft glow of lamplight spilling from the doorway.

The scene that greeted me was like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. Betty and George, our unofficial grandparents to half the town, were ensconced on the overstuffed floral sofa. Betty was knitting what looked like a scarf long enough to stretch around the entire B&B, while George peered over his reading glasses at a well-worn copy of “Moby Dick.”

As I entered, they both looked up, their faces breaking into warm smiles that immediately made me feel like I was wrapped in a cozy blanket.

“Moxie, dear!” Betty exclaimed, setting aside her knitting. “We were wondering when you’d be back. Rough day?”

I sank into the armchair across from them, Sneaker immediately jumping into my lap. “You could say that,” I sighed, absently stroking the cat’s fur. “This investigation is... well, it’s complicated.”

George closed his book with a soft thump. “Ah, the best mysteries always are, my dear. But remember, even Sherlock Holmes needed his Watson to bounce ideas off of.”

I couldn’t help but smile at the comparison. “Well, I’ve got Sammy, but sometimes I think we’re both equally lost.”

Betty tsked sympathetically. “Now, now, don’t you go getting discouraged.”

She glanced at George as she set her knitting to the side. “Why, it reminds me of our wedding day. Talk about complications!”

George let out a hearty chuckle. “Oh boy, are you going to tell the shoe story again?”

My curiosity was piqued. “The shoe story? I don’t think I’ve heard this one.”

Betty’s eyes twinkled with mischief. “Oh, it’s a doozy. You see, on the morning of our wedding, this scatterbrain,” she said, playfully swatting George’s arm, “was so nervous he couldn’t think straight.”

George shook his head, a fond smile playing on his lips. “In my defense, I was about to marry the most beautiful woman in the world. Who could blame me for being a bit distracted?”

Betty rolled her eyes, but I could see the faint blush on her cheeks.
