Asian Americans

Asian Americans represent the fastest growing ethnic/racial group in the U.S. accounting for some 4 % of the total US population. A large majority (64.5 %) of Asian Americans were born abroad, more than any other group. Asian Americans come from more than 20 countries representing more than 60 different ethnicities (Joo and Price 2002). Different immigration patterns as well as languages are particularly important issues for the Asian population. And, while reports often suggest that Asian American health status to be on par with or better than White Americans, “an overall assessment of the AA/PI ethnic category leads to simple but misleading conclusions” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2001). For example, Vietnamese women are five times more likely to have cervical cancer than White women. Other Asian groups experience differential access to health insurance and care. Over one-third of Korean Americans are not covered by health insurance (Brown et al. 2000).
