Muslim historians like Ibn Ishaq would select which reports were most reliable based on their opinion of their sources’ reliability. They would also try to assure that a source had received his reports from an eyewitness via an unbroken chain of transmitters. When reports conflicted or contradicted one another, Ibn Ishaq had to choose which one was more reliable or include both versions (for example, we saw the conflicting reports about Muhammad’s last will and testament). There were significant differences amongst early Muslim historians on important events in the Prophet’s life. Was he 63 or 65 when he died? Musa bin ‘Uqba (d. 758), an early scholar of the Prophet’s campaigns, held that the night journey to heaven occurred one year before the Hijra, but another early scholar, al-Zuhri (d. 742), said seven years before.
