Chapter Seven

TAWNY

The next morning, Tawny rolled over to see Braydon dressing in his scrubs for work. She tried to remember last night and blanked after they left Yukon Johnny’s.

Braydon turned around with an icy stare. “How are you feeling?”

“Not good. I think I messed up.” She put a hand to her forehead.

“Hm, you think?” he huffed, his tone not a friendly one.

Tawny’s stomach twisted, remorse eating at her insides. “I’m so sorry. I got talked into those Jell-O shots.” She propped herself up on an elbow as the room spun.

“Who talked you into them?” He stood with his hands on his hips. “Let me guess. Clayton, right?”

She nodded, clueless at what else to say.

Braydon threw up his arms. “I walk into a strip bar and see my wife dancing at a biker table in her bra and underwear. What would you think if you saw me doing that with a bunch of women? How would you feel?” He shifted to the other foot.

“What do you mean? I was dancing in my underwear?” Her heart thundered a mile a minute. No! That couldn’t have happened—could it? Then again, she hadn’t remembered climbing up to the top of that cell phone tower a few years ago after drinking.

“You don’t remember? When I walked in you were lap dancing with the bikers. I’m just thankful you didn’t strip all the way. You would have been arrested.”

Heat crawled up Tawny’s neck, and she steadied her dizzy gaze on her husband. “You’re making that up to make me feel bad for drinking.”

“Oh, yeah?” He raised his phone. “Clayton texted these.”

Tawny peered at his phone screen to see photos of herself and a video. Sure enough, there she was in her bra and panties, dancing for the bikers. “Oh my God,” she muttered, incredulous.

“Oh my God is right.” Braydon jammed his phone into his back pocket, his temple pulsating in and out. “I can’t do this right now. I suggest you stay home today. We’ll talk when I get home.”

Her mouth was dry, and her lips glued together. “Braydon, honestly, I’m so sorry. I’ll make it up to you.”

“Not sure you can this time. This may be a deal breaker.”

Panic snaked through her veins. “Seriously? You mean you’re willing to end our marriage over this?”

Braydon’s mouth formed a straight line. “We’ll talk when I get home.”

She desperately wanted to say, ‘I love you’ but didn’t.

Braydon disappeared out the bedroom door. When the truck revved, Tawny stumbled to the window, watching it vanish down the road, leaving a cloud of snow swirling in its wake.

Tears rushed out, and she didn’t bother to stop them. Why did she drink and lose control? She knew better, yet she’d let the demons in to swallow her like before. She’d promised Braydon before they married, she would never drink again.

I broke my promise. The deal breaker.

Remorse sucks.

“Please don’t let this be the end of us,” she sobbed, her tremulous voice saddening her even more. The day after tomorrow would be their first anniversary, on Valentine’s Day.
