14.1. Lisle and May Thompson in Hyde Park, Sydney, on the day of their engagement, June 1939.

Lisle and May Thompson served at Bankstown until 1942 and thereafter for four years at Manly, on Sydney’s northern beaches. They lived in the manse attached to each church while raising three infant children, Elizabeth (b. 1941), Paul (b. 1943) and Helen (b. 1945). Lisle also served a long term as secretary of the Social Questions Committee of the Baptist Union of New South Wales, in which capacity he built ‘a reputation for straight talking to all sections of the community.’11

Then came a major change of pace.

In 1946, Lisle left his comfortable appointment at Manly to become the Baptists’ official state evangelist in New South Wales. It was an onerous post requiring a huge amount of travel, but he still needed to provide a home for his wife and children. Scraping together the money for a deposit, he and May bought a ramshackle old house at 25 Empire Street, Haberfield (a disused property attached to the local Baptist church). The family moved in. It was a happy household, but, for Lisle over the next five years, little more than a base camp. For weeks at a time he would leave Haberfield in a 1935 Chevrolet gospel wagon and journey to different parts of the state, preaching the gospel, displaying films and distributing Christian literature.12 After each trip his wife and children welcomed him back home excitedly, only to wave him away again a week or so later.
