Chapter 12 Detour

“I thought we had to get ready for the gala. I thought there were a million things to do.” Gus ignored Weston and stared out the window, leaving Weston to wonder to himself.

They rode in silence, and Weston learned not to ask any questions. Only after they pulled up to the towering Dream City Hospital, did Weston give Gus a sideways glance.

“Okay. I’ll bite. What are we doing here?”

Gus smiled. “You’ll see.” He opened the card door and looked back at Weston. “Well, come on.” Weston got out his side of the car door, not appreciating having his day hijacked.

They came together at the front of the building and entered through the automatic doors on the main level. It was clear that between their conversation and getting in the car, Gus had phoned someone because they were greeted by a team at the check-in area.

A woman stepped forward. “Welcome Mr. Morley. Mr. Fletcher. I’m nurse Rylan and I’m here to show you around.” Both men stepped forward to shake hands with Rylan. The staff was very friendly with Weston and Gus. Over the years, Weston’s parents had donated millions to the facility and Weston continued the tradition even after they were gone.

The nurse led them to the Rehabilitation Center wing. They walked down a short hallway to a room containing fitness equipment. A young woman was doing lunges on the padded floor, and Weston finally understood why Gus brought him. She bent her prosthetic leg at the knee, touching it to the ground as she lifted herself back up.

“This is Devony Shire, one of our hardest working patients. I usually have to turn the lights out to get her to stop training.” Rylan gave Devony knowing smile, and she looked up long enough to see who was standing next to the nurse.

“Oh, my gosh! You really are Weston Morley!” She wore a Dream City University Softball hoodie, and a smile stretched across her face. “When Rylan said you were coming, I thought she was just pulling my leg. The good one even.”

Weston immediately liked Devony. She had an air of confident around her and exuded positivity. He extended his hand to greet her. “Nice to meet you, Devony. You go to DCU?” He nodded at her hoodie.

“Yeah, I’m a junior there. Well, I was. I mean, I’m still taking online classes while I get back on my feet.” Devony wasn’t much younger than he was. She looked to be in her early twenties. Even though Weston was only in his mid-twenties, he didn’t feel that way. It made him think of Emma, also the same age but a mother and with so many responsibilities.

“And you play softball?” Weston asked.

“I live and breathe softball!” She laughed. “I just don’t play it so much anymore.”

He gestured to the name embroidered on the sweatshirt. “Supersonic, huh?”

“Yeah, an account of my speed.” She grinned. “But I haven’t done much running lately.” She pointed down to her prosthetic. “But as soon as I can get this beast figured out.
