ROB

Rob walked to the bathroom off the living room, grateful no one was around. He’d started to well up when Sarah had hugged him, and it was a good thing he’d been able to crack a joke because he wasn’t sure what Sarah would’ve done if he’d started blubbering. Hell, he wasn’t sure what he’d do if that happened. Sebastian was the emotional one, not him.

Yeah, right.

After stepping into the small room, he closed the door then dropped his hands onto the counter in front of the sink. He knew he’d still see both Sarah and Sebastian a lot, even in the offseason, but for some reason it felt like he was being cut loose. It wasn’t like all three of them were in some sort of relationship together and they’d just broken up, but he’d gotten used to both of them generally being around.

In late summer, he was turning twenty-seven and, since Sebastian and Sarah had gotten together, had started thinking more about having his own family–a wife, a couple of kids, or more than a couple since he loved kids. But Christa was still in the back of his mind. The last thing he wanted to do was get hurt again. That had been a real bitch to deal with.

After he composed himself, Rob helped unload the truck. They finished quickly then convened in the backyard, where Sebastian handed out beers and bottled water. Sarah had apparently told the guys in relationships to call their women because Jaela and a couple of the other wives and girlfriends arrived.

As he sat in the backyard on a newly purchased lounge chair, beer in hand, he watched from behind his sunglasses as each couple greeted one another, exchanging quick kisses and talking about their respective days. Bouncing her baby on a knee, Jaela spoke to Sarah. The child took in her surroundings with interest, and when she spotted Rob, he lifted his sunglasses and made a goofy face. Clapping her tiny hands together, she grinned back.

“You know, anytime you want to babysit, she’s available.” Ben took the seat next to Rob. “She’s a chick magnet. You could take her to the park.”

Rob scoffed. “I do not need props to get women, thank you very much.”

“Oh, is your girl here?” Ben pretended to look around.

“Just because I don’t have some wifey at home waiting for me doesn’t mean I’m hurting for company, bro.” He sounded defensive but couldn’t seem to temper the reaction.

“I’m sure you’re very charming. I’ve heard rumors to that effect at least.”

Rob leaned over and punched Ben none too gently. “Ha ha.”

“Oh, look at that, Jaela needs me. Later.” Rising, Ben threw a smirk Rob’s way before trotting over to do Jaela’s bidding.

Rob shook his head, not sure if the scene was touching or pathetic. His musings were interrupted by Sebastian, who called over from the grill he was manning with Jordan’s dubious assistance. “Hey, can you help Sarah bring stuff out? We decided to try to eat out here.
