EXERCISE #3

Watching without comment. Walking through a carnival, loud with barkers, vying for your business, your attention, you walk by, smiling, observing, inwardly calm.

"I will give you three shots for a dollar," says one of the carnival barkers. Another offers four. Still another, five.

One barker offers a large stuffed animal as a prize for getting 3 shots out of four. Another offers an even larger prize for only 2 shots out of four. And so it goes, until you hear an offer you can't refuse.

But then comes an even better offer. "One shot out of four for the biggest prize". It's a great offer but there's a catch. If you lose, you have to give up your health or your freedom or your growth or your dignity or all of the above. If you refuse to play, you must leave the carnival.

There are several things you can do. 1. Leave 2. Play 3. Question the rules. 4. Refuse to abide by the rules 5. Ignore the barker who proposes this arrangement 6. Bop the barker upside his head 7. Pay attention to the barker but don't respond in any way.

Awareness Without Comment

We will use option #7 for this exercise. The barker is all of the things that capture our attention - sights, sounds, thoughts, feelings, smells, worries etc. We will notice how our attention jumps from one thing to another but will not get caught up in the game of any of them, no matter how enticing, no matter how great the reward, no matter how great the threat. We will allow our attention to move as quickly and frequently from one thing to another as it so desires, as quickly as the barkers are able to capture it.

Yet there will be a center from which all this observation takes place. Remaining at the center is essential to allow the attention its free movement. This process will strengthen the center and strengthen the freedom of movement of the attention.

Attention will become smooth with nothing for the barker to grab hold of. It will become light, clear, resilient and alive.

And so will the body. The human body forms from the pattern of attention. The body is a form of joy, the unfolding of a natural cycle. The pattern of attention, implanted by creativity, regulates that unfolding.

Attention is the communication of how that process of unfolding is doing. (Barkers try to become a substitute pattern and to implant that pattern in your attention).

Earth’s Creativity Flows Through You

This exercise will allow the attention to become disentangled from the barkers' snares (by smiling at each and then moving on) and will center the attention into the next level of creativity. The first level is our own personal creativity. The next level is the creativity of the earth. Our own creativity may be thought of as a hole, a tiny emptiness, through which the creativity of the earth pours forth.

In this way, we are a seed of the earth, and our own growth and activity only has relevance in harmony with the natural cycles of the earth.
