“Tell me about why you came to Apex, Rey?” James thought they should start where the trouble had, and that was when Rey walked in. He figured that was fate, right?

“I had a client who was filtering my information about Patel’s organization. She was killed.”

“Okay, and you came to Apex to find out who had killed her?” Hank was scribbling notes like mad.

“No, I came to get help. I was scared I was next, and I didn’t know why.”

“Why Apex?” Hank seemed willing to ask the weird questions.

“Because it was the best. When I looked it up, that was the agency. And there were bodyguards—I needed that.”

“Okay.” Hank glanced up, meeting his eyes, then Rey’s. “So I need to look at the reviews. See what might catch someone’s eyes. I don’t want to rule anything out.”

Rey nodded. “I can try and recreate the search for you.”

“Thanks. That’s a good idea.”

James nodded. “I still have all the documentation I had when we searched up Patel as the culprit. A new set of eyes might help.”

And Hank was a smart kitty, for sure. James liked that. Not just a pretty face.

A flush rose in Hank’s cheeks not long after his thought.

You’re fascinating. And mine.

Working here, angel. Hank was so pleased, though.

I know. It’s hot.

Shhh. Hank patted his thigh. “Okay. We’ll start with all the documentation. What was in the information from your client, Rey?”

“Work records. Her HR file. I had a hard copy, and I had to return it.”

“There’s no copy?” Hank asked.

Rey went pink. “There were crocodiles. Ask Dylan.”

Hank snorted. “But there must not have been anything that twigged you, since it was a surprise to find her dead.”

“It was stupid—HR stuff, I swear. Nothing weird or illegal or anything. Nothing anyone would die over.”

“Huh.” Hank flipped to another piece of paper, starting a flow chart. “So, you get the file. You return it, she’s dead. You go on the run?”

“Yeah. I drive around, I’m scared to go home, and I started stopping anywhere I could get Wi-Fi.”

“To look up agencies? Or did you contact someone?” Hank’s gaze sharpened.

“I don’t remember if I did. I’m pretty solitary, I think. Mostly.”

James frowned. “Wasn’t there another friend of yours who did information? Didn’t you get ahold of him?”

“Oh. Oh, right. Yeah. God…Does that make me terrible, that I’d forgotten?” Rey looked absolutely awful.

“No way.” Hank reached to touch the back of Rey’s hand. “I’ve lost more than one friend, and we tend to push that away.”

“I just…it was my fault, you know?” Rey teared up, and it didn’t take thirty seconds before Dylan was right there.

“Hey. Hey, what’s wrong?”

“I was telling them about—about all the stuff when we met.”

“Ah.” Dylan gathered Rey up. “You got enough to start with?” He gave James and Hank a look.

“We do.” Hank winked.

“I didn’t mean to upset him.” James felt like shit.

“I know, man, but he needs a break now.”

“Yeah. God, what a mess.”

Hank shrugged a little. “It’s the nature of our jobs. But Rey is a sweetheart, yeah?”

“He’s a lover.
