Years later, on a charter flight in a Cessna 206 with three large passengers, I was still ignorant. The locals (non-pilots) recommended I take off to the south, even with that steep uphill slope at the end. There was no wind, and I just couldn’t make myself do it. Consequently, I took a heavy non-turbo-charged Cessna 206 into a very bad place to the north. With 20 degrees flaps and full power, I massaged the airplane through a shallow left turn against the terrain with the stall horn blaring—a very scary lesson learned the hard way. Just because you might get away with something in a STOL aircraft, don’t blindly think that it is the proper way to do it!

Trying to evaluate this airstrip while on the ground was nearly impossible for me, and the only accurate appraisal would have been to take a good hard look from the air before landing.
