This follows the pattern of mystic progress familiar in Christian and other religious experience. First there is a conversion, the confrontation of a divine imperative which demands a decision. Like the shaman or apostle, Jennie was summoned for service.

The next stage involves what in Christian terms might be called sanctification, the aspiration to sainthood. The first step has been a salvational decision, but this must be followed by progress on the upward Way of Christ, the imitatio Christi. The New Adam must replace the Old, and the devotee must strive for a new humanity. The goal is nothing less than rebirth or apotheosis. Salvation has been a gift, but now the devotee must compete against his lower nature to become worthy of that gift in some small way. There must be attainment, growth and its fruits.
