He pulled out one of the stools on the other side of the island and sat across from her. She watched as he peeled the paper wrapping off a cupcake and bit into the fluffy chocolate cake. He moaned his enjoyment and her nipples hardened. When he was done he sat and watched her spread white butter icing on the batch from the cooling rack. The room was quiet, and neither spoke, but the silence was comfortable. She’d expected some tension between them after their night together, but it wasn’t there.

The timer went off, and she pulled the last batch from the oven.

“I thought you said you didn’t like to cook?” he asked when she was done setting that batch out to cool.

“Baking isn’t cooking.”

“Yeah, you can burn baking and it still tastes good.” He reached for one of the fresh-from-the-oven cakes with a grin.

She smacked his hand with a spoon. “No more, these are for Vanessa’s party.”

“Will you go with me?”

She stilled. “To the barbecue?”

“Yeah. Why not? I mean, we live right next door to each other.”

She stared at him. “Is that why you’re asking me, because we’re neighbors?”

He met her gaze and they stared at each other for a minute. “Not only because we’re neighbors.”

She took a deep breath. “What’s going on, Jackson? We agreed on one night.”

“We did.” He nodded. “But we were friendly before that, why shouldn’t we still be friendly?”

She moved around the island counter and perched on the stool next to him. There was definitely something more going on. Her radar wasn’t that messed up. “Is that all?”

He stood up and paced over to the window. Even with his back to her, she heard the anxiety in his voice when he asked, “Are you a dominatrix?”

So that was what he meant by testing her promise not to lie.

“I don’t really like that word,” she said casually. It hadn’t been an easy question for him, but her instincts were telling her to keep things as light as she could. Jackson was suddenly strung tighter than a cat in a roomful of rocking chairs, and she didn’t want to spook him. “I prefer domme or domina. Or even top, as I don’t think of myself as a true lifestyle dominant.”

He turned to her, but remained over by the window. “What’s the difference?”

“I like to play,” she said. “I like to play a person, male or female, even without the sexual aspect, but I’m not someone who has to always be in control.”
