CHAPTER FORTY ONE
The following afternoon, Reece stepped out of the elevator, crossed the foyer, and knocked on the door. No answer. He knocked again. Silence. He gave a heavy sigh, leaned closer, and said, âJacques, are you in there? I need to talk to you.â Nothing. He tugged a small notepad and pen from the pocket of his jacket, scribbled a note for the vampire to call him, and pushed it under the door. Where would he be at this time of day? The PI hadnât forgotten Eva Van Helsingâs gift to Jacques of a daywalker ring. Huge mistake. It gave him license to go wherever he pleased, do what he liked, which is why Reece thought he was the one killing these latest victims.
He stepped up to the elevator and jabbed the call button, realizing he should have called before arriving unannounced. Jacques could be anywhere in the city doing God knows what. Something slithered in the pit of Reeceâs gut, alerting him to the fact he might be on the right track. Jacques did whatever he wanted without any consideration for the consequences. And he did need to sustain his existence.
The elevator door sprang open. Jacquesâ and Reeceâs eyes met.
âDetective. To what do I owe the pleasure?â Jacques stepped out of the lift, passed the PI and unlocked his suiteâs door. âI suppose youâll want to come in.â He motioned for Reece to go in ahead of him, picked up the piece of paper from off the floor, dropped it into the nearby waste paper basket, then closed the door behind him. He shrugged out of his calf-length black woolen jacket, hung it on the coat rail, and continued past the PI into the living area of the penthouse. Turning around, he said, âAre you coming?â
Reece followed him into the bright room, a different atmosphere to how Jacques once lived, and took a seat on the sofa. The vampire sat opposite.
âThere has been another killing.â
âOh? Where?â
âDoesnât matter. Have you found out anything yet?â
âAs I said, I will contact you when I have something viable to offer.â
âNot good enough, Jacques. Whoeverâs doing this will continue to do so until we stop them. Have you given any thought to the fact they may be attempting to implicate you? To get you out of the way?â Andreâs hypothesis rang true and Reece thought it might prompt the vampire to talk.
Jacquesâ stare darkened. âYour concern is unnecessary, Detective. I can take care of myself.â He stood up. âWhen I have information Iâll impart it to you. I have a business call to make.â
Reeceâs cue to leave. He got to his feet, headed to the door. Before opening it, he turned around. âYou need to be careful. You could be the killerâs target.â
âDonât concern yourself with my well-being, Detective. As I said, I can take care of myself. Now, if youâll excuse me?â
Reece sighed as he stepped out into the foyer, closing the door behind him. Jacquesâ feigned offer of assistance bothered him.
