The Final Judgment

After the ninth plague, Pharaoh was so angry with Moses that he told him to leave and stay away—and threatened that if he ever saw Moses again he would kill him (Ex. 10:28). Moses agreed with Pharaoh that he would never see him again (v. 29).

Before leaving Pharaoh, however, Moses announced God’s final judgment on Pharaoh and the Egyptians. Although the nature of this judgment was news to Pharaoh, it was not new to Moses because God had told him about it before any of the plagues began. When God called Moses at the burning bush in the desert, He said to him, “When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: and I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn” (4:21-23).

But in spite of the fact that God, in His omniscience, knew that He would finally have to bring this judgment on Pharaoh, He still demonstrated much longsuffering and mercy to Pharaoh. God gave Pharaoh many opportunities to repent and turn to Him, but Pharaoh absolutely refused to do so. Because Pharaoh and Egypt had not heeded God’s commands or responded to His mercy, God brought this final judgment on them.

This reminds us of how graciously God deals with lost sinners concerning salvation. It is also a reminder of how graciously He deals with believers concerning yielding totally

to Him. God is longsuffering and full of mercy, but if He is rejected, He must finally act in judgment or discipline, depending on whether the person is an unbeliever or a believer. Although we do not know when that time is, there apparently comes a day when God says, “I will wait no longer.” And remember, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31).

The Bible reveals that judgment awaits those who refuse God’s mercy and reject Christ as Saviour. Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Proverbs 29:1 warns, “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Second Thessalonians 1:8,9 tells how the unsaved will be destroyed when Christ returns to earth: “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.”

The final judgment of all the unsaved will take place before the Great White Throne. Revelation 20:11-15 says, “And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.
