Moses’ Call and Commission

When Moses saw the burning bush and decided to investigate why it was not consumed, the Bible says, “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I” (Ex. 3:4).

Moses' Graduation Day

This dramatic means of catching Moses’ attention was God’s way of showing Moses that he was about to “graduate” from his 40 years of private schooling in the desert. He had spent those 40 years primarily alone with God, and now he had concluded this stage of his training. God knew that His man was now ready. The time had come, according to God’s promise, to deliver Abraham’s descendants from Egypt after 400 years of affliction (Gen. 15:13,14). The burning bush incident, therefore, became the setting of God’s commissioning service for Moses. It was a “commencement exercise” for Moses, since he had completed his intensive training program in the desert. But even on this significant day, Moses was to learn several important lessons. This event became the great turning point in his life; he was never the same again after his commencement exercise.

There is no indication that the burning bush which caught Moses’ attention was anything but an ordinary bush. Surely Moses had seen other bush fires before, but in this instance, the bush continued to bum and yet was not consumed by the fire. The bush shone with the emblem of deity, and from the heart of it came the voice of God addressed directly to Moses.
